Big Brothers Big Sisters of Dickinson and Clay Counties helps boys and girls, most of whom are considered at risk and live in single-parent homes, achieve their full potential through long-term personal relationships with carefully screened and caring volunteers. Volunteers and children are matched in several different programs that are flexible to the interests and needs of the match.
Statewide data shows that after being matched in our program, Littles are:
46% less likely to initiate drug use
27% less likely to start drinking alcohol
55% less likely to skip school
33% less likely to have violent confrontations
Also, based on information gathered at the end of the 2008-2009 school year from teachers, volunteers, and parents of children in our local Big Brothers Big Sisters program:
47% of Littles showed improvement in their ability to eliminate problem behavior (areas measured were ability to avoid delinquency, substance abuse, and early parenthood)
71% showed improvement in relationships with peers, family members, and other adults
69% of Littles showed an improvement in school performance (areas measured were usage of school resources, academic performance, attitude towards school, school preparedness, classroom participation and behavior)
88% of Littles showed an increase in self-confidence
We have over 60 children currently waiting for a mentor. Sign up to make a "BIG" difference in the life of a child!
